Complete Wipe (Data Erasure Review)

As part of a thorough investigation, we procured over 40 used smartphones from various manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, Pantech, Motorola, TAKE, HTC, and Sony. This acquisition was validated through an assessment conducted by the Digital Research Center of Korea University’s Graduate School of Information Security.

Our findings indicated that all models, with the exception of specific LG (F240L/F120K) and Samsung (SHW-M110S running Android version 2.3.6) devices, successfully performed a complete data wipe. Currently, we are in the process of diagnosing whether the issues with the three identified models stem from the "Complete Wipe" functionality or device errors. We intend to provide updates once further investigations are concluded.

Upon examining the data remnants from these smartphones prior to validation, we discovered alarming results reminiscent of a recent article concerning the recovery of 40,000 photographs from 20 second-hand smartphones. Evidence suggested that personal sensitive information—including private photographs, identification images, bank account details, and even security card images—remained intact. All such data has since been thoroughly erased.

The decision to offer "Complete Wipe" free of charge stems from our commitment to protecting invaluable personal information; relying on external entities for this protection is not advisable.

Introduction to Complete Wipe

Simply deleting or resetting a smartphone does not guarantee that the physically recorded data is removed. Restoration software available from the internet or app stores can easily recover deleted data.

The restoration of deleted photographs, videos, audio files, and sensitive information such as bank account details poses significant risks to users’ privacy. For instance, securely stored copies of identification documents or certificates on a smartphone may be exploited for unauthorized loans.

To ensure complete data erasure, execute "Complete Wipe" after performing standard data deletion procedures. This process guarantees that recovery of erased files is impossible. The duration for complete eradication varies based on memory size and device model, typically ranging from 30 to 90 minutes.

For users facing inconvenience while using smartphones, we recommend utilizing the scheduling feature to facilitate operations during off-peak hours.

User Instructions

1. Delete photos, documents, videos, and other files via standard methods through your gallery or file manager.
2. Engage the immediate execution function of "Complete Wipe" for complete data erasure (you will receive an alert message upon completion). Please note that only deleted data will be affected; any residual data will not be erased.
3. Post-completion, you will be unable to recover or restore photos, documents, videos, or any other files that have undergone complete deletion (when selling or replacing your device, ensure all smartphone data are wiped before execution).

To achieve the highest level of security before selling or replacing your device, perform a factory reset followed by executing Complete Wipe after installation.
